A compelling drama series drawing from a heartbreaking real-life tragedy is now streaming for free on Channel 4. The Girl from Plainville explores the story of Michelle Carter and the devastating suicide of her boyfriend, Conrad Roy III, with Elle Fanning and Colton Ryan in the starring roles.
The Harrowing Events Unfold
This eight-episode series delves into the troubling details surrounding Conrad’s death and the ensuing high-profile trial. The case also inspired a 2019 HBO documentary, I Love You, Now Die, and the 2018 film Conrad & Michelle: If Words Could Kill.
Conrad, aged 18, took his own life in July 2014 by filling his car with carbon monoxide. His body was found inside the vehicle. Earlier, in November of the previous year, he had attempted suicide by ingesting a bottle of Tylenol.
The couple first connected in 2012 on a Florida vacation. Their relationship evolved into a long-distance connection, mostly maintained through text messages. Conrad struggled with anxiety and depression, often sharing his suicidal thoughts with Michelle, who had faced her own mental health challenges.
Investigations uncovered hundreds of text messages from Michelle urging Conrad to proceed with his plans. On the day of his death, she wrote: “You keep pushing it off and say you’ll do it, but you never do. It’s always gonna be that way if you don’t take action.” Twelve hours later, she sent: “Conrad, I love you so much. Please tell me this is a joke. I’m so sorry. I didn’t think you were being serious. I need you. Please answer me.”
The Trial and Aftermath
In February 2015, Michelle faced charges of involuntary manslaughter. During her 2017 trial, she was convicted and sentenced to two and a half years in prison. Due to good behavior, she served only 11 months before her release.
The series traces the timeline leading to Conrad’s death and the courtroom drama that followed, captivating audiences with its intense narrative.
