Community Rallies Around Family After Teen’s Cancer Battle
A Greater Sudbury family continues to honor their daughter’s memory nine months after the 15-year-old lost her battle with soft tissue cancer. Zoé Trépanier of Val Caron passed away in June 2023, just days before her 16th birthday.
Remembering a Resilient Spirit
Education leaders recall Zoé as an inspiring presence at École secondaire catholique l’Horizon. “Zoé was a bright light with remarkable resilience,” said Principal Anik Ledo. “Throughout her health challenges, she consistently requested normalcy – insisting on continuing her studies alongside peers despite her diagnosis.”
The school implemented special accommodations to support Zoé’s educational journey, creating a comfortable workspace in a less crowded success center and maintaining online learning options during medical treatments. “Her determination to graduate with friends drove our commitment to helping her earn credits,” Ledo explained.
Family Gratitude Amid Grief
Tracy Trépanier, Zoé’s mother, expressed appreciation for the academic flexibility: “The school’s willingness to adapt meant everything. Zoé was adamant about staying on track with her classmates despite everything.”
The teen received her cancer diagnosis at age 14 and maintained what family describes as extraordinary maturity throughout treatment. “She lived more life in 16 years than many do in decades,” her mother reflected.
Lasting Legacy Through Community Action
A dual fundraising initiative launched this week aims to support both current families facing childhood cancer and future students. Proceeds from commemorative sweatshirt sales and community events will benefit:
- The Northern Ontario Families of Children with Cancer organization
- A newly established Zoé Trépanier Scholarship fund
Zoé’s sister Stéphanie, currently attending the same high school, described the community response as overwhelming. “This recognition means so much,” she said. “Zoé demonstrated incredible courage that deserves to be remembered while helping others facing similar challenges.”
Those wishing to contribute can contact École secondaire catholique l’Horizon directly regarding donation procedures. School administrators confirm fundraising events will continue through the academic year.
