Close Call During Northern Ontario Traffic Stop
A routine traffic investigation nearly turned tragic when an out-of-control commercial vehicle careened toward police on Highway 11 near Novar. The January 29 incident occurred as officers responded to an unrelated collision in the area.
Dangerous Driving Conditions Reported
Authorities confirm a tractor-trailer entered the active emergency zone at excessive speed, lost control, and jackknifed into a snowbank mere feet from a parked police cruiser. “This driver approached too fast, failed to maintain control, and created an extremely hazardous situation,” stated officials familiar with the investigation.
Charges Filed Against Commercial Driver
The 25-year-old Timmins truck operator faces charges of careless driving and violating Ontario’s emergency vehicle protocol. Police emphasize no injuries resulted from the collision despite the proximity to officers working at the scene.
‘Slow Down, Move Over’ Laws Reinforced
Following the incident, law enforcement officials underscored the critical importance of Ontario’s roadside safety regulations. “Every worker deserves to return home safely,” said OPP Constable Kyler Brouwer. “When you see flashing lights, reduce speed and change lanes if possible – it’s not just courtesy, it’s the law.”
The province’s legislation mandates drivers must slow to 60 km/h or less when passing stationary emergency vehicles with activated lights on highways with speed limits under 80 km/h, and to 40 km/h on roads with lower limits.
