One Canadian city bursts into early spring while another battles relentless blizzards. Extreme weather patterns highlight sharp contrasts across the nation’s diverse landscapes this winter, particularly between Vancouver and Toronto.

Vancouver’s Record Warmth Sparks Early Blooms

Vancouver heads toward its first snow-free winter in 43 years, with lush greenery and flowers emerging after one of the warmest Januarys on record. Cherry blossoms appeared by mid-January, soon joined by daffodils and other blooms. Bees buzzed actively on a Thursday amid the mild conditions.

Meteorologist Bobby Sekhon from Environment Canada explains that repeated high-pressure ridges create stable air over British Columbia, limiting winter weather to brief periods. “This winter in general has been very abnormal,” he states.

Record daily highs occurred this week in areas like Sandspit and Bella Bella. However, the warmth melts skating rinks, shuts down ski hills, and raises worries about sudden freezes harming tender plants, alongside broader climate change effects.

Toronto Endures Snowiest January on Record

Some 3,400 kilometres east, Toronto residents face heavy snow and bitter cold through much of January. Toronto Pearson Airport logged 46 centimetres of snow on January 25, the highest daily total ever recorded. The month’s accumulation reached 88.2 centimetres, the snowiest January—and month—since records began in 1937.

Environment Canada meteorologist Trudy Kidd attributes late-January chills to the polar vortex, a swirling pool of cold air usually confined to the Arctic that leaks southward when weakened.

Nearby, Waterloo shattered its all-time winter snowfall record by January’s end. Hamilton issued a cold weather alert midweek, with wind chills near -22 C. Toronto’s forecast predicts strong winds and a low of -18 C.

National Perspective on Winter Extremes

While Toronto shivers, it pales against some regions’ ordeals. Braeburn, Yukon, hit Canada’s coldest temperature in 50 years at -55.7 C on December 23, underscoring the country’s varied winter challenges.
