Dean Franklin, a former contestant on The Voice UK, has passed away at the age of 36. The London-based singer and street performer revealed his oesophageal cancer diagnosis in December.
His mother, Marie, shared the news on social media yesterday, February 9. “As a family we are truly heartbroken to announce that our precious boy who fought so courageously over eight weeks and three days passed over at 21:39pm last night,” she wrote. “He was surrounded by love. I have been getting [messages] from people this morning and wanted as his ma to manifest my son’s courage to share with you all.” She added, “As a family we will post in more length when we are able. Until then please know that the love you gave to our Dean and all of us has meant so very much.”
Television Career and Mentorship
Franklin competed in the 2016 season of the singing competition, where Paloma Faith served as his mentor. Throughout his cancer journey, he regularly updated followers on his progress.
Emma Willis, host of The Voice UK, responded to one of his posts with, “Sending you so much love Dean.” Faith commented, “You are so brave,” prompting Franklin to reply, “Thank you for the love, P. I’m holding onto every bit of it right now.”
Advocacy for Buskers and Final Gig
In recent years, Franklin advocated for buskers’ rights. On January 10, he delivered a poignant final outdoor performance at Piccadilly Circus, captivating crowds with Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah.’ A viral video captured the moment, as he told the audience, “I really hope and pray this is not the last time.” One onlooker shouted, “Look at what one human being can do!”
Franklin shared his last video on January 30 from a palliative care clinic. He leaves behind his 17-year-old daughter.
