Apple Studios now oversees production of future seasons of the hit series Severance. The company acquired the show’s intellectual property and all associated rights from Fifth Season last December in a deal valued at around $70 million.

Shift in Production Control

Fifth Season continues as an executive producer, but Apple Studios takes full responsibility for the series. This move positions Severance as one of Apple’s flagship titles, joining shows like Owen Wilson’s Stick and Kristen Wiig’s Palm Royale. Apple previously brought the sci-fi series Silo in-house after its debut season.

Addressing Rising Costs

Production expenses for Severance had surpassed Fifth Season’s capacity. The studio previously sought advances from Apple and explored relocating filming from New York to Canada for tax incentives. Apple also assisted with budgeting and advertiser outreach.

Season two emerged as Apple’s most-viewed series on the platform, prompting the full takeover. This ensures continued production in New York without financial limitations.

Expanded Future Plans

The series plans for four seasons total. Opportunities for spinoffs now appear viable, with showrunner Dan Erickson and director Ben Stiller expressing openness to the idea.
