The NBA imposes hefty fines on the Utah Jazz and Indiana Pacers for resting key players during winnable games, signaling a stronger stance against tanking.

League Targets Jazz for Conduct Violation

The Utah Jazz face a $500,000 penalty for conduct detrimental to the league in two recent matchups. On February 7 against the Orlando Magic and February 9 versus the Miami Heat, coach Will Hardy substituted out forwards Lauri Markkanen and Jaren Jackson Jr. Officials note that these players remained fit to continue, leaving game outcomes uncertain.

Pacers Penalized Under Player Policy

The Indiana Pacers receive a $100,000 fine for breaching the Player Participation Policy. The team scratched starting forward Pascal Siakam and two others in their game against the Jazz.

Teams Eye Draft Lottery Boost

With records of 18-37 for the Jazz and 15-40 for the Pacers, both squads position well for high picks in the upcoming NBA Draft lottery, ahead of a promising draft class in June.

Commissioner Silver Addresses Integrity

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver states, “Overt behavior like this that prioritizes draft position over winning undermines the foundation of NBA competition and we will respond accordingly to any further actions that compromise the integrity of our games.” He adds, “Additionally, we are working with our Competition Committee and Board of Governors to implement further measures to root out this type of conduct.”
