Heavy snowfall blankets Newfoundland, forcing closures of schools, businesses, and government offices through Wednesday. Accumulations reached 22 centimetres at St. John’s International Airport by 6:30 a.m., with an additional 20 to 40 centimetres forecast through the day and into the evening.
Snow and Wind Forecast
Meteorologist Rob Carroll from the Gander weather office anticipates even greater totals in higher-elevation regions. Strong northerly winds accompany the snow, with coastal gusts up to 100 km/hr.
“That will help generate some blowing snow and poor visibility throughout the day,” Carroll stated.
Widespread Disruptions
The school board issued an early closure announcement Tuesday evening ahead of the storm’s arrival. Provincial government offices remain shut Wednesday, while Metrobus and GoBus services halt operations for the day.
St. John’s International Airport reports numerous flight delays and cancellations, with the final arrival occurring just before midnight Tuesday.
