Danika Mason, a prominent Australian sports reporter for Channel Nine, has issued a public apology after appearing to slur her words during a live broadcast from the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy.
The On-Air Incident
Mason delivered a sports update live from Livigno in the Italian Alps to the Today show on Wednesday. Video footage captures her stumbling over words, referencing iguanas and coffee prices unexpectedly, and confusing references to the and US. Her eyes appeared glazed as she continued the report, prompting laughter from studio host Karl Stefanovic, who later attributed it to the freezing conditions affecting speech.
Mason also made snow angels on camera before the segment concluded after about five minutes. The clip quickly spread across social media, sparking divided opinions among viewers.
On-Air Apology
Returning to the Today show the following morning, Mason addressed the mishap directly after her update. “I totally misjudged the situation, I shouldn’t have had a drink, especially in these conditions,” she stated. “It’s cold, we’ve got altitude, and not having had dinner probably didn’t help as well. But I want to take full responsibility; it’s not the standard I set myself.”
She added, “I’m OK, probably just a little embarrassed,” and thanked supporters for their messages. Hosts Jenny Azzopardi and Stefanovic offered backing, with Azzopardi noting Mason’s hard work and Stefanovic calling her a “legend.”
Reactions and Support
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese voiced support, describing Mason as tired from travel and time differences. “Nothing to see here,” he remarked.
Social media responses varied, with some praising her enjoyment of the event and others deeming it unprofessional. Mason, renowned for her National Rugby League coverage, emphasized shifting focus back to Olympics coverage.
Channel Nine has not issued further comment on the matter.
