Geordie Greig criticizes Labour’s proposed reforms to support for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), claiming they prioritize financial savings over genuine improvements. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson voices strong commitment to enhancing SEND services, yet Greig argues the changes are “really about money.”

Upcoming SEND System Overhaul

Labour plans to unveil its SEND reform proposals this week. The measures include reviewing children’s existing support plans to clearly outline their rights to assistance, as detailed by Phillipson.

Challenges from Labour MPs

Labour MPs face pressure from constituents, with inboxes flooded by messages from families anxious about current SEND provision. During an appearance on Laura Kuenssberg’s Sunday program on February 22, Greig questioned the reforms’ viability, asking: “Is she really going to guarantee that these children are not going to be left without the necessary help?”

He highlighted the scrutiny from party lawmakers, adding: “That is a crucial question for Labour MPs who will be circling this. Are we going to see another U-turn?”
