Scotland’s busiest train station, Glasgow Central, remains shuttered following a major fire that erupted at a nearby vape shop on Sunday afternoon, March 8. The blaze rapidly spread to adjacent buildings, causing part of the iconic station structure to collapse.
Extended Closure and Service Disruptions
Network Rail and emergency services continue to evaluate the extensive damage. ScotRail confirms the station will stay closed through Tuesday, March 10, with high-level platforms out of service entirely. Low-level services operate but skip Glasgow Central, rerouting passengers to Argyle Street or Anderston stations.
Commuters face ongoing challenges during rush hour across western Scotland, as numerous routes remain suspended or altered. Travelers should verify journeys via the ScotRail app or website before heading out. Refunds for unused tickets are available through these channels, and station staff stand ready to assist network-wide.
Official Response and Safety Measures
ScotRail chief operating officer David Ross stated: “Glasgow Central will remain closed on Tuesday while the impact of the fire in the building next to the station is assessed and we expect disruption to continue for several days.”
He added: “We’d like to thank our colleagues in the fire and emergency services who worked incredibly hard to tackle the blaze and prevent it from spreading to the station itself. We know this closure will cause significant disruption for our customers, and we’re very sorry for the impact this will have on their journeys.”
“Our teams are working hard to keep people moving where possible, and we’d encourage customers to check their journey before travelling using the ScotRail app or website.”
Fire Service Update
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service crews persist in cooling hotspots in the building’s stonework and collaborate with structural engineers to verify stability. As of 3:30 p.m. on Monday, March 9, eight appliances, including three high-reach vehicles, remained on scene.
A spokesperson noted: “We cannot speculate on the cause of the fire at this time. In line with fire investigation protocols, a multi-agency investigation will be conducted, however due to the significant damage that has occurred this may be hampered.”
Due to debris near railway infrastructure, Glasgow Central Station stays closed to ensure public safety. Further service updates will follow as assessments progress.
