A routine ice fishing outing on Georgian Bay escalated into chaos when a massive ice shelf detached from the shore, stranding 23 anglers in a desperate bid for safety.

The Sudden Break

Kevin Fox, one of the fishermen involved, recounted entering the ice around 8:30 a.m. on Sunday with his friend Alfie. They ventured approximately four to five kilometers offshore, drilled a hole, and prepared to fish. Just five minutes later, Fox spotted the ice cracking open.

“I yelled to Alfie that the ice was opening,” Fox stated. “He started calling out, and we notified all the other ice anglers nearby. After that, it was a frantic run.”

Fox estimated around 50 people were on the ice that morning. When the shelf separated, 23 ended up on the drifting section, unable to see the shore’s edge due to its vast size—spanning multiple kilometers. Anglers relayed warnings by shouting and cellphones to those farther out, urging everyone to pack gear and regroup for escape.

Despite warmer-than-usual temperatures in nearby areas, Fox described the ice as “decent” before the incident.

Rescue Operation

Emergency responders, including aviation and marine units from the Ontario Provincial Police along with local fire departments, mobilized quickly. High winds of 60 to 80 km/h complicated the effort, but by mid-afternoon Sunday, all 23 were airlifted to shore.

Fox captured video of a helicopter hoisting him from the ice floe. Officials reported minor injuries, primarily hypothermia, after the ice further fractured into sections, partially submerging some individuals in frigid water.

Heavy Losses and Lessons Learned

The anglers abandoned valuable gear—including ice augers, drills, and strike masters—resulting in losses totaling tens of thousands of dollars. Fox alone lost several thousand dollars worth of equipment.

“Every fisherman out there paid a price,” Fox said. “As soon as they stepped off that ice, every single person left something behind.”

Though shaken, Fox intends to resume ice fishing this weekend but vows to avoid Georgian Bay shores for the foreseeable future.
