A new tenant has stepped in to replace the former Yorks cafe at Birmingham’s Ikon Gallery, bringing fresh excitement to the Brindleyplace hotspot. Medicine Bakery prepares to open its doors from mid-March, filling the void left after Yorks shuttered its kitchen last autumn.
Medicine Bakery Expands in Birmingham
Renowned for its stunning bakes and quality coffee, Medicine Bakery already operates popular outlets across the region, including a spot on New Street inside Selfridges and another at Birmingham Botanical Gardens. The exact opening date remains unconfirmed, but visitors can anticipate a mid-March launch.
Yorks ended operations at the Ikon shortly after closing its corner location on the Paradise development and a branch on Stephenson Street.

Spring transforms Oozells Square, home to the Ikon Gallery, with its stunning annual cherry blossom display. The free-to-enter contemporary art venue continues to draw crowds with innovative exhibitions.
Upcoming Exhibitions
From March 25 to September 6, the ‘UPRIGHT’ exhibition showcases rarely seen works by acclaimed artist Angela de la Cruz, alongside a new commission developed with Birmingham Royal Ballet.
On the same date, the final installment of the Break The Mould trilogy features ceramics from creators including resident artists Jack Ky Tan, Halima Cassell, and Roo Dhissou. Visitors can also join ceramics workshops led by Balsall Heath’s Sundragon Community Pottery and Digbeth’s Modern Clay cooperative studio.
