More than 40 geology students and staff gathered perilously close to the base of a 150-foot crumbling cliff at West Bay in Dorset, ignoring prominent warning signs about frequent rockfalls.

Dangerous Field Trip on Jurassic Coast

The group ventured along the narrow beach during a field trip to the Jurassic Coast, examining 180-million-year-old sandstone formations. Dressed in red hard hats and yellow high-visibility vests, they stood just yards from the unstable cliff face for at least 20 minutes.

A local resident spotted the students while testing a drone near the car park. Simon Wilmott described the scene: “I saw about 20 students coming off the beach. Then there was another 40 further along, standing under the cliff. They were pretty close, but the tide was in, leaving little room.”

Wilmott noted the abundance of warning signs highlighting rockfall dangers. “They wore hard hats, but I doubt they’d help much if rocks fell,” he added.

Recent Devastating Rockfall

West Bay, known as the filming location for the ITV drama Broadchurch, saw a major landslip in January. Around 500 tonnes of rock tumbled from the cliff, creating a massive dust plume and blocking the beach with a 30-foot debris pile.

Video captured about 20 beachgoers fleeing the collapse. Coastguards responded to ensure no one was trapped, confirming no injuries.

Ongoing Risks and Safety Advice

Rockfalls plague this coastal stretch, triggered by heavy rain weakening the sandstone. Dorset Council urges visitors to heed signs, stick to paths, and avoid cliff bases and edges.

The council emphasized: “Rockfalls and landslips can happen anytime. Stay safe by following warnings and keeping away from cliffs. These events shape the unique coastline.”

In 2012, a 22-year-old tourist, Charlotte Blackman, died from injuries sustained in a rockfall at nearby Burton Bradstock beach.
