Renowned broadcaster John Stapleton, a fixture on BBC and ITV screens, passed away at 79, leaving a net estate valued at £4,544,801 to his son Nick. Probate documents reveal the gross value of his estate reached £5,536,228 before deductions for expenses and debts.
Estate Inheritance Details
Stapleton signed his will in 2017, originally designating the fortune for his wife, TV presenter Lynn Faulds Wood. She died in 2020 at age 72 following a stroke, redirecting the inheritance to their son Nick.
Final Days and Health Battle
Stapleton succumbed to Parkinson’s disease, complicated by pneumonia, in a hospital in September 2025. His agent, Jackie Gill, confirmed the details in a statement: “John had Parkinson’s disease, which was complicated by pneumonia. His son Nick and daughter-in-law Lisa have been constantly at his side and John died peacefully in hospital this morning.”
In October 2024, Stapleton publicly shared his Parkinson’s diagnosis on BBC’s Morning Live alongside Nick. He described the frustration of his condition: “Speaking is how I’ve earned my living for the best part of 50 years. It’s very frustrating sometimes, particularly [when] people are constantly saying to you: ‘Sorry, what did you say?’ And you have to repeat yourself, time and time again.”
He remained pragmatic and positive: “I am fairly pragmatic about the prospect of this getting worse. I try to remain positive, because what’s the point of not being? There’s no point in being miserable… It won’t ever change. I mean, Parkinson’s is here with me now for the rest of my life. Best I can do is try and control it and take the advice of all the experts.”
Illustrious Career
Over nearly 50 years in broadcasting, Stapleton gained fame on BBC’s Watchdog, GMTV, ITV’s Good Morning Britain, and as an original presenter on Sky News. His reporting covered major events, including the Kosovo war and four US elections.
