Martin Hewitt, the head of the UK’s Border Security Command, has stepped down after 18 months in the role. Appointed to reduce small boat crossings across the English Channel, Hewitt leaves at the end of the month. Ministers are arranging an interim leader while seeking a permanent replacement.

Departure Details Emerge

Officials have not confirmed whether Hewitt’s exit was voluntary or enforced. A Home Office spokesperson expressed gratitude for his leadership: “We thank Martin Hewitt CBE QPM for his dedicated efforts since the Border Security Command’s creation. Over the past 18 months, it has united government agencies, law enforcement, and international partners to combat people smuggling gangs and enact the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Act.”

Persistent Channel Crossings Challenge Efforts

The current government pledged to dismantle trafficking networks behind the crossings, yet arrivals continue at high levels. Last year marked the second-highest annual total of small boat entries into the UK during Hewitt’s tenure.

In an October appearance before the Commons Home Affairs Select Committee, Hewitt voiced frustration over delays by French authorities in stopping departures. He added that building effective deterrents “is always going to take time.”

Opposition Response

Conservative shadow home secretary Chris Philp attributed ongoing issues to government policy, not Hewitt. “The government’s complete failure on small boats stems from Keir Starmer and Shabana Mahmood’s reluctance to act decisively, such as exiting the ECHR and deporting illegal arrivals within a week,” Philp stated. He criticized Labour’s scrapping of the Rwanda deportation plan, which faced legal hurdles.

Hewitt’s Policing Background

Hewitt brought extensive policing experience to the role, including time as chairman of the National Police Chiefs’ Council. Upon his appointment, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer highlighted his qualifications: “No more gimmicks. This government will target smuggling gangs exploiting lives across borders. Martin Hewitt’s expertise will drive international enforcement to dismantle these networks, secure our borders, and restore order to the asylum system.”
