A security expert urges residents to seek underground shelter immediately during a nuclear attack, highlighting the absence of clear government directives on survival measures.
Expert Advice on Nuclear Safety
Anthony Glees, professor at the University of Buckinghamshire, advises heading underground if possible—such as a tube station, cellar, or under the stairs—and remaining there for at least 72 hours. He warns that individuals in central London or near military sites like Faslane or RAF bases face instant incineration.
Glees emphasizes avoiding high elevations: “Don’t try to head for the hills, don’t live in an apartment block, the higher you are, the greater the danger.”
Concerns Over UK Preparedness
Historian and author Dr. Mark Felton notes the UK’s vulnerability, stating it lacks an advanced air defense system like Israel’s Iron Dome or sufficient surface-to-air missiles to protect infrastructure and nuclear facilities. “The UK is not prepared for any such attacks,” Felton told his YouTube audience on Mark Felton Productions.
Glees criticizes the government: “We lack official guidance from the Govt on this which I think is fairly disgraceful.”
UK Boosts Gulf Defense Support
Amid rising tensions, Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry Luke Pollard met with executives from 13 UK defense firms, along with ambassadors and leaders from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the UAE, Iraq, and Jordan. Discussions focused on supplying defensive gear and technology to counter Iranian drone and missile threats.
The UK plans to acquire more Lightweight Multirole Missiles (LMM) from Thales UK in Belfast, proven effective in Middle East air defense. These will equip British forces and support regional partners, including UK-based training.
Defence Secretary John Healey stated: “Iran’s indiscriminate attacks are a threat to Britain, our allies and our partners in the region. That’s why our dedicated Armed Forces are taking defensive action in the Middle East.”
“A nation’s Armed Forces are only as strong as the industry that supports them. I’m proud of how our military and industry is stepping up together – just as we are for Ukraine – to offer rapid support to our Gulf partners,” Healey added.
Pollard remarked: “As Iranian attacks against our partners in the Gulf continue, the UK is stepping up our support – both military and industrial. We are committed to defending British people, interests, and partners across the region.”
This initiative aligns with a new UK-Ukraine partnership to counter low-cost, high-tech threats like drones.
