Debicki’s Recent Emmy Triumph
Elizabeth recently secures her first Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for portraying Princess Diana in The Crown. She accepts the award from Only Murders in the Building star Da’Vine Joy Randolph at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, beaming with joy.
“I didn’t write anything down because I’m very superstitious and now I’m in a real pickle,” she jokes. She thanks writer Peter Morgan, producers, cast, crew, and hair and makeup artist Deb Ormrod. “Gosh, playing this part based on this unparalleled incredible human being has been my great privilege,” she adds. “It has been a gift.”
She wears a low-cut Christian Dior gown on the night.
Audition Stories from The Crown Stars
Elizabeth Debicki and co-star Emma Corrin reveal they both auditioned for guest roles in The Crown before leading as Princess Diana. Debicki appears in seasons five and six, while Corrin, 28, stars in season four. Both earn Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards for their performances.
In a recent Variety Actors on Actors discussion, Debicki shares how she auditioned after season one aired. “Maybe we’re better at acting when we’re not trying,” she says. “I went in for the Season 2 part, and I got an email a few days later from my agent saying, ‘Not that part, but we are thinking…’ I guess they must have felt something Diana in it.”
She watches the series faithfully for years, hoping for the role. Initially anxious about Diana’s voice, she notes, “What you as the actor playing that character owe the audience is a very specific sonic imprint. I felt a huge responsibility… For Diana, it felt like a music.”
Corrin, depicting a young Diana, studies her mannerisms, especially from the post-engagement interview. “The most quintessential bit, for me, was the post-engagement interview. The mannerisms that she had… they almost become tics.”
