Billionaire Elon Musk offers to cover salaries for Transportation Security Administration (TSA) personnel during the partial Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shutdown, but the White House declines the proposal over significant legal hurdles.

The shutdown started in mid-February when lawmakers failed to secure funding for the agency. TSA employees continue working without pay, resulting in staffing shortages and extended security lines at airports across the nation.

Musk’s Public Offer

Musk posted on his X platform: “I would like to offer to pay the salaries of TSA personnel during this funding impasse that is negatively affecting the lives of so many Americans at airports throughout the country.”

White House Stance

White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson explains the rejection: “We greatly appreciate Elon’s generous offer. This would pose great legal challenges due to his involvement with federal government contracts.”

She adds: “The fastest way to ensure TSA employees — and all DHS employees — get paid is for Democrats to fund the Department of Homeland Security.”

President Donald Trump initially praised the idea, telling reporters: “I’d love it. I think it’s great. Let him do that.”

TSA Workers’ Hardships

Many TSA agents live paycheck to paycheck and now face severe financial strain, including struggles with rent, groceries, and basic needs. Acting TSA Administrator Ha Nguyen McNeill testified before the House Committee on Homeland Security: “Officers are reportedly sleeping in their cars at airports to save gas money, selling their blood and plasma, and taking on second and third jobs to make ends meet, all while expected to perform at the highest level when in uniform to protect the traveling public.”

McNeill continues: “Many have received eviction notices, lost their childcare, missed bill payments and been charged late fees, damaged their credit, defaulted on loans, and have been unable to even qualify for a loan to help ease the financial burden during the shutdown.”

Political Divide

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt attributes the impasse to Senate Democrats: “We have attempted in good faith numerous times … to go to the Democrats with reasonable offers.” She accuses: “The cruelty is the point. They want this chaos.”

Democrats demand reforms to immigration enforcement before approving DHS funding.

Trump’s Additional Measures

President Trump announces potential deployment of National Guard members to assist at airports. He also commends Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents stationed at over a dozen airports, posting on Truth Social: “Thank you to our great ICE Patriots for helping. It makes a big difference.”
