A detailed analysis of average prices for 245 popular branded grocery items in February highlights significant cost differences among UK supermarkets, particularly for shoppers without loyalty cards. Items tracked daily included favorites like Heinz, Nescafé, Dove, Kellogg’s, and Mr Kipling, with totals calculated across categories based on industry sales data.

Non-Loyalty Shoppers Face Highest Costs at Major Chains

Shoppers at Sainsbury’s without a Nectar card paid the most at £942.66 on average, 14% higher than Asda’s £823.58. Tesco non-Clubcard prices totaled £916.56, 11% above Asda. Surprisingly, these exceeded Waitrose (£899.05, 9% over Asda) and Ocado (£867.17, 5% over Asda), despite their upscale reputations.

Aldi and Lidl, typically the cheapest overall, were excluded due to limited branded stock.

Amoy Straight to Wok Noodles averaged £1.25 at Waitrose and Morrisons but £2.15 at Sainsbury’s and Tesco without cards—a 72% markup. Ryvita Thins (Sea Salt & Vinegar) cost £1.25 at Waitrose versus £2.30 elsewhere without loyalty perks, 84% more.

Other stark differences included:

  • Oral-B Pro Expert Toothpaste: £2.24 at Asda, £3.95 at Sainsbury’s/Tesco without cards (76% more)
  • Sharwood’s Medium Egg Noodles: £1.28 at Asda, £2.10 at Tesco without Clubcard (64% more)
  • Filippo Berio Olive Oil (750ml): £4.98 at Asda, £8 at Sainsbury’s without Nectar (61% more)
  • Tilda Basmati Rice (4-pack): £1 at Tesco without card, £2.25 at Waitrose (125% more)

Loyalty Schemes Slash Prices Dramatically

With loyalty cards, costs drop sharply. Tesco Clubcard shoppers paid £837.43, just 2% over Asda. Sainsbury’s Nectar users averaged £848.56 (3% over Asda), Morrisons More card £858.67 (4%), and without £860.79 (5%).

Certain loyalty prices beat competitors: Carex Hand Wash at 95p with Tesco Clubcard versus £1.70 at Waitrose (79% less). Kellogg’s Crunchy Nut Cornflakes (300g) averaged £1.55 at Tesco, up to £2.50 at Waitrose (61% more). L’Oréal Elvive Shampoo (200ml) hit £13 without Tesco Clubcard but £6.50 with it.

Coffee showed extremes: Kenco Smooth (200g) at £8.35 without loyalty at Tesco/Sainsbury’s, £7 at Waitrose, £6.32 at Asda. Nescafé Gold Blend lowest at Waitrose (£6.25), £8.35 at Sainsbury’s non-Nectar.

Expert Insights on Shopping Strategies

Reena Sewraz, retail editor, stated: “This analysis uncovers the profound impact of loyalty schemes on grocery pricing. Branded favorites can prove cheaper at Waitrose than major supermarkets for non-card holders—a shift unimaginable recently.”

She added: “For specific brands, compare unit prices, shop around, and stock up on deals to avoid overpaying. Without a loyalty card, Asda often offers better value on branded goods.”
