Dudley Liberal Democrats are urging a review of plans to install an outdoor gym at Wollaston Recreational Ground using funds from Aldi.

Aldi Store Expansion Triggers Funding

The equipment, consisting of seven items, will be financed through a £38,000 contribution from Aldi. This stems from planning obligations tied to the retailer’s store extension on Bridgnorth Road in Wollaston village.

Initial council planners rejected the proposal to build on The Dell, a local green space. However, the Planning Inspectorate upheld Aldi’s appeal, granting approval with conditions.

Resident and Candidate Concerns

David Sheppard, Liberal Democrat candidate for the Wollaston and Stourbridge Town ward in upcoming local elections, highlights local dissatisfaction. “Wollaston residents are not at all happy about the sell-off of The Dell and how the compensation money is being spent,” he states.

Sheppard suggests alternative uses for the funds, such as upgrading the nearby Girl Guides hut or enhancing road safety. “The council would know this if they bothered to ask anyone,” he adds. “I feel for the residents of The Dell and King Street who are giving up their open space with no clear benefit for the community.”

Section 106 Agreement Details

The payment falls under Section 106 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, aimed at mitigating development impacts. Funds must support improvements in open spaces, transport, education, or affordable housing.

The council’s director of economy and infrastructure decides on allocation, after consulting cabinet members, ward councillors, and finance officers.

Liberal Democrat councillor Andrew Tromans announces a campaign to ensure Wollaston residents influence the spending decisions.
