Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, UK drivers face skyrocketing petrol and diesel prices, prompting advice to adopt simple habits for better fuel efficiency.

Middle East Conflict Drives Oil Shock

US-Israeli strikes on Iran, which began on February 28, have sparked retaliatory actions from Tehran targeting US bases and effectively shutting down the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping lane. This disruption has unleashed a worldwide oil and natural gas crisis, pushing fuel costs higher across Britain and beyond.

Diesel prices hit an average of 181.2p per litre on Sunday, a 27% jump from 142.4p before the conflict intensified last month. Petrol averages now stand at 152p per litre, up 14%. Some stations report sales nearing 200p per litre for certain fuels.

Forecourt operators maintain that these increases stem directly from elevated wholesale charges beyond their control.

Key Fuel-Saving Tips for Motorists

Vehicle security firm Lock & Track offers practical strategies to reduce consumption amid rising costs. A standout recommendation addresses the windows-versus-air-conditioning debate tailored to UK conditions.

“At speeds below 45mph, opening a window proves more efficient for cooling the cabin,” the firm states. “Above 45mph, however, aerodynamic drag from open windows exceeds the energy needed for the air conditioning compressor.”

Additional no-cost measures include removing unnecessary external attachments to minimize drag, maintaining steady speeds where safe, and accelerating smoothly.

Government Steps to Empower Drivers

On Tuesday, authorities plan to release a directory of third-party apps and websites leveraging the new Fuel Finder scheme, which displays real-time UK pump prices. All forecourts must update the database with price changes within 30 minutes, a requirement in place since February 2.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves emphasizes protecting household budgets and supporting motorists. “This price-tracking initiative empowers drivers with vital information to locate the cheapest local fuel and avoid overcharges,” she stated.

Reeves recently convened with fuel retailers at Downing Street, stressing their joint responsibility to ease price pressures on consumers.
