United States men’s national team preparations for the World Cup face a significant challenge after striker Patrick Agyemang sustains a serious injury during a club match on Monday afternoon.

Injury Details Emerge from Derby County Game

The 25-year-old forward, who plays for Derby County, landed awkwardly while jumping for a ball in their 2-0 victory over Stoke City. Medical staff treated him on the field before stretchering him off in tears, raising fears of an Achilles tendon rupture that could derail his tournament aspirations.

Derby County head coach John Eustace confirmed: ‘He’s gone off for a scan. We’ll wait and see the results of that. Hopefully it’s not as bad as what it might be.’

Contender for Pochettino’s Squad

Agyemang emerges as a strong candidate for Mauricio Pochettino’s 26-man roster after netting six goals in 14 appearances for the USMNT, including in their recent 5-2 defeat to Belgium. He competes with Ricardo Pepi and Haji Wright for the backup striker position behind expected starter Folarin Balogun.

Pochettino, who assumed control in August 2024, recently noted the selection difficulty: ‘It is going to be painful because that process… is going to be difficult to pick only 26 from 35, 40. Who will be there is going to be happy, who is not on the roster is going to be sad.’

The coach emphasized the ongoing evaluation: ‘[This] was the end of our cycle… for preparation for the World Cup. I think this is the end because the next roster is going to be the roster that is going to be involved. I think it’s too many things that we need to assess and to see in the next few weeks.’

Recent Form and Selection Challenges

Pochettino rotated the lineup with six changes in last week’s loss to Portugal in Atlanta, following the Belgium setback four days earlier. He faces the task of narrowing a large player pool ahead of the USMNT’s World Cup opener against Paraguay on June 12.

On Tuesday last week, Pochettino added: ‘I think now they know that it’s going to be a competition. They know that we are going to see every single week, every single game, and we are going to assess one year and a half or more, and we are going to make the decision.’
