New Brunswick’s leading port authorities seek expanded partnerships with the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, Europe’s second-largest port, following a recent trade mission to Belgium and France.
Premier Holt Heads Delegation
Premier Susan Holt spearheaded the mission to foster port-to-port collaboration between Antwerp-Bruges, Port Saint John, and the Port of Belledune. She was accompanied by CEOs Denis Caron of Port of Belledune and Craig Estabrooks of Port Saint John, along with representatives from Opportunities NB and Intergovernmental Affairs.
Port of Belledune Targets Green Energy Exports
European shipping accounts for roughly 90% of activity at the Port of Belledune in northern New Brunswick. Denis Caron notes that a prior visit to Antwerp-Bruges in November prompted an invitation for Port Saint John and provincial officials to join efforts.
The port signed a memorandum of understanding with Antwerp-Bruges last May to develop a supply chain for fuels, emphasizing hydrogen and its derivatives. Caron highlights current biomass exports, primarily wood pellets to the U.K., positioning Belledune as a major player. Future plans include green hydrogen, methanol, and other sustainable energy sources.
Since September 2022, Port of Belledune has inked similar agreements with three additional European ports.
Port Saint John Builds on Existing Links
Craig Estabrooks emphasizes that the mission reinforces established trans-Atlantic services. Two routes under the Gemini cooperation between Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk already call at Antwerp. Additionally, DP World, the terminal operator at Saint John since 2017, manages a major container terminal in Antwerp, creating inherent synergies.
Holt Advances Key Negotiations
Premier Holt’s presence lent seniority to discussions, signaling New Brunswick’s commitment. “I add heft to our commitment and advance deals for our port teams to finalize,” Holt states. Her involvement secured meetings with carriers like CMA-CGM for Port Saint John and financiers such as Crédit Agricole for Port of Belledune.
Holt recently joined a trade delegation to India, led by Prime Minister Mark Carney. “We must act swiftly to lock in customers before they pivot to the U.S. or revert to old patterns,” she adds.
