The University of North Carolina has appointed Michael Malone as its new men’s basketball head coach on a six-year, $50 million contract, positioning him among the highest-paid in college basketball with an average annual salary of $8.3 million.
Contract Breakdown
Malone’s deal begins at $7.5 million in base pay and escalates to $9 million by the 2031-32 season. Incentives could add up to nearly $1.5 million each year. The buyout clause starts at $8 million through April 1, then decreases to $6.5 million in 2028 and $5 million in 2029.
The agreement also allocates a $4 million salary pool for assistant coaches and support staff, plus a minimum $6.75 million from revenue-share funds dedicated to men’s basketball.
Comparison to Campus Peers
While Malone ranks second nationally—behind Kansas coach Bill Self’s $8.8 million average—he trails UNC football head coach Bill Belichick’s five-year, $50 million pact. Belichick’s deal excludes an additional $1.3 million paid to his son Steve as defensive coordinator.
Malone’s Introduction and Background
At his introductory press conference Tuesday in the Dean Smith Center, Malone addressed the crowd: “I did not play here. I’m not from Carolina. But I think they’re ready to embrace somebody new. A new vision to try to get this program back to where we all want it to be.”
The 54-year-old NBA champion coach replaces Hubert Davis, dismissed March 24 after five seasons following Roy Williams’ retirement. Malone’s 12-year NBA head coaching tenure included a 10-year stint with the Denver Nuggets, culminating in the 2023 title led by Nikola Jokic. The Nuggets parted ways with him last spring, just shy of the regular season’s end.
UNC boasts six national championships, 21 Final Four appearances, and alumni like Michael Jordan, James Worthy, Vince Carter, and Tyler Hansbrough. Shortly after arriving from Colorado, Malone hosted 10 to 12 former Tar Heels players in his office.
Personal Ties to UNC
Malone lacks prior college head coaching experience but connects through his daughter Bridget on the Tar Heels volleyball team. He recently attended basketball practices and spoke to the team at Davis’ invitation.
