California First Partner’s Public Role and Advocacy
Jennifer Siebel Newsom, California’s First Partner and wife of Governor Gavin Newsom, focuses her efforts on documentaries and education through The Representation Project. The nonprofit promotes gender justice via films and programs. California schools incorporate her works, such as ‘Miss Representation,’ into curricula.
Parenting Approach to Gender Roles
Siebel Newsom shares her method for reading books to her four children. ‘What I’ve done with both my daughters and my sons is if I’m reading the book and the protagonist is a male, I just change the he to a she,’ she explained in a resurfaced clip.
Personal Story Shared with Inmates
After screening her documentary ‘The Mask You Live In’ at San Quentin prison, Siebel Newsom discussed a childhood tragedy with inmates. In 1981, at age 6, she accidentally caused the death of her 8-year-old sister in a Hawaii golf cart incident. ‘I told them about my own loss,’ she said. ‘I think it shocked them that this blonde lady… had a similar story and was perhaps in the wrong place at the wrong time –– but wasn’t punished the way they were, because clearly, it was an accident.’
Political Statements and Future Plans
Siebel Newsom has spoken about extending the governor’s initiatives. ‘The Gov and I… we have three more years and we’re trying to institutionalize our values so that they carry on beyond our term,’ she told an audience.
At a February Planned Parenthood event, she questioned media focus. ‘We just find it incredulous that we have Planned Parenthood here,’ she stated. ‘Women are 51 percent of the population, and the majority of the questions — all of these questions — have really been about other issues. It’s fascinating.’ She added, ‘You wonder why we have such a horrific war on women in this country and that these guys are getting away with it. Because you don’t seem to care.’
Charity Oversight Concerns
The Representation Project has faced questions over state compliance. Adam Andrzejewski, founder of OpenTheBooks, a charity watchdog, stated, ‘Being the wife of the governor should not serve as any kind of exemption.’
In 2018, the nonprofit hosted a gala attended by figures including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, San Francisco Mayor London Breed, and actress Jane Fonda.
Family Dynamics and Son’s Influences
Governor Newsom noted that their 14-year-old son, Hunter, follows conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Siebel Newsom recently addressed Hunter’s interest in influencer Andrew Tate, describing him as ‘confused’ by such figures. She has expressed concerns about these influences contrasting her advocacy on gender issues.
Siebel Newsom reflected on public readiness for her role, stating that America is not yet prepared ‘for a First Partner.’
