Rory McIlroy convinced his parents to attend the Masters after they believed their absence contributed to his victory the previous year. The Northern Irish golfer achieved a rare feat by becoming only the fourth player to win at Augusta National in consecutive years. His triumph last year completed the Career Grand Slam, while this victory marked his sixth major championship, matching Sir Nick Faldo’s tally.
Family Embrace and Emotional Speech
After sinking the final putt on the 18th green, McIlroy shared joyful moments with his daughter Poppy and wife Erica. He then hugged his mother and father, whom he had persuaded to travel despite their superstitions. In his winner’s speech, McIlroy said: “My mum and dad weren’t here last year to celebrate with us, and surprisingly I had to convince them to come this year because they thought the only reason I won was because they weren’t here. So I’m glad we proved that wrong. But mum and dad, I owe everything to you. You are the most wonderful parents, and if I can be half the parent to Poppy that you were to me, I know I’ll have done a good job.”
Tournament Recap: From Record Lead to Narrow Victory
McIlroy surged to -12 after the second round, setting a Masters record and building a six-shot lead. The field narrowed the gap over the weekend as the 36-year-old played level par across the final two days, securing the Green Jacket by one stroke over Scottie Scheffler.
“It was a tough weekend, but I’m so happy to hang in there and get the job done,” McIlroy stated. “I wanted to come back and prove last year wasn’t a fluke.”
Final Round Drama
Early in the final round, McIlroy dropped shots with a double bogey on the fourth, allowing Cameron Young to seize the lead. He responded fiercely, carding four birdies in seven holes midway through. Reflecting on the grind, McIlroy joked: “I don’t make it easy! I used to make it easy back in my early 20s when I was winning these things by eight shots. No, it’s just hard. It’s hard to win golf tournaments, especially around here.”
He added: “You’ve had maybe a couple of runaway winners over the years, but it always seems to be a very tight finish at this golf course. I think it’s the nature of the golf course and what’s at stake. I certainly didn’t think I was home and dry after Friday night, and I knew I still needed work to do. But thankfully I did enough.”
