Georgie Gardner, the 55-year-old veteran broadcaster, delivered her final 9News Sydney bulletin on Friday night, marking the end of nearly 24 years with the network. Viewers witnessed her emotional sign-off as she reflected on a storied career filled with highlights and challenges.

Colleagues Share Heartfelt Tributes

Weather presenter Sophie Walsh fought back tears while honoring Gardner’s impact. “Tonight marks a sad night for everyone at Nine,” Walsh said. “The place won’t be the same without you. You’re a legend in the industry and a wonderful mentor to me and many others in the newsroom. We celebrate your incredible career tonight.”

Sport presenter James Bracey echoed the sentiments, calling Gardner the “ultimate professional and ultimate person.” He noted how fortunate the team felt sharing the studio with her, adding that viewers at home shared the same appreciation.

Montage and Personal Reflections

A special montage showcased key moments from Gardner’s career, set to Cold Chisel’s Ian Moss performing “Georgia on My Mind.” Gardner responded with humor and gratitude, admitting she felt “blown away” by her colleagues’ words. She joked about her evolving hairstyles over the years but emphasized the joy of the role.

“Delivering the news has been an enormous privilege for nearly 25 years,” Gardner stated. “From the moment Brian Henderson welcomed me into the 6PM studio, I’ve understood the duty to remain accurate, impartial, informative, human, sincere, and respectful.”

She expressed deep appreciation for being a trusted guest in Australian homes. “I thank you for investing your trust,” she told viewers. Gardner also praised the behind-the-scenes team of reporters, producers, editors, technicians, and artists who supported her work.

“I’ve cherished being part of the Nine News team and learned so much from colleagues past and present,” she added. “Nothing lasts forever, and for me, it’s time to move on.”

Overwhelmed by Support

Gardner nearly broke down discussing the overwhelming support after her announcement. “Such kindness, encouragement, and goodwill feel precious in turbulent times,” she said, holding back tears. “I’ll miss you, but I’m grateful for this experience.” She then professionally transitioned to Allison Langdon and A Current Affair for the last time.

Career Journey and Future Plans

Gardner joined Channel Nine in 2002 and rose to present the 6pm Friday and Saturday bulletins, succeeding Mark Ferguson. She hosted National Nine News Morning Edition from 2006, replacing Leila McKinnon, and spent eight years on Today. After a family-focused break in 2014, she returned to co-host Today with Karl Stefanovic, later alongside Deborah Knight and Allison Langdon.

In March, Gardner announced her departure after 34 years in broadcast journalism. “After 34 years, I’ve decided to call it a day,” she shared. “My resignation after nearly 24 years at Nine brings trepidation and exhilaration.” She looks forward to new opportunities. “At 55, there’s so much left to learn, discover, and contribute,” she concluded optimistically.
