Brisbane Broncos delivered a dominant 32-12 victory over the Canterbury Bulldogs at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night, with centre Kotoni Staggs shining brightly despite a nagging foot injury.
Staggs Battles Plantar Fascia Strain
The 27-year-old strained his plantar fascia during the Broncos’ narrow 21-20 win against the Wests Tigers the previous weekend. Typically, such an injury demands a moon boot and extended rest, yet Staggs pushed through the pain to support his injury-depleted team against the Bulldogs.
Post-match, Staggs revealed to NRL legend Johnathan Thurston that he was ’50-50′ about playing but couldn’t let his teammates down. ‘I had to get through it… So it was worth it,’ he said, adding that he had ‘snapped’ his plantar fascia—a description that prompted Thurston to feign gagging on camera, underscoring the injury’s severity.
Origin Selection Buzz Grows
Staggs, who featured in one State of Origin game for the NSW Blues in 2022, bolsters his selection case with this resilient display. Broncos coach Michael Maguire endorses his readiness for the high-stakes series.
‘If I was in that position (NSW coach), I’d be picking him,’ Maguire stated. ‘I get to see him week in, week out—how he’s training, how he’s grown as a player and leader. He’s excellent.’
Maguire, a dual premiership winner, hailed Staggs as ‘one of the best centres in the game right now,’ admitting a touch of bias but emphasizing his hope for Origin discussions. He praised Staggs’ two-week injury battle as embodying Anzac spirit and the grit demanded in Origin football.
‘The ability for a player to play through what he has—that’s in the Origin space,’ Maguire added.
