Booking.com users face a heightened risk of phishing attacks following a recent data breach that exposed some guest booking details to unauthorized parties.
Data Breach Overview
A Booking.com spokesperson emphasized the company’s commitment to guest security and data protection. The platform detected suspicious activity allowing third parties to access certain booking information. Teams swiftly contained the issue, updated PIN numbers for affected reservations, and notified impacted guests. Importantly, no financial data or physical addresses were compromised.
The spokesperson urged vigilance against phishing attempts, stating: “Booking.com will never ask guests to share credit card details by email, over the phone, WhatsApp or text, or ask guests to make a bank transfer that is different from the payment policy details in their booking confirmation.”
Expert Cybersecurity Tips
As summer travel peaks in June, July, and August, cybersecurity experts recommend extra caution. Andy Pickett, Chief Technology Officer at The Business Hub, highlighted concerns over the incident, questioning the security measures in place and whether it stemmed from procedural lapses rather than technical flaws.
Pickett advised: “Never click links or download attachments from unexpected or urgent emails.” Instead, users should always navigate directly to official websites. He also warned: “Be cautious about what information is shared online, any sensitive information that could help hackers fake legitimacy to gain your trust.”
