Households across the UK face hot summer-like spring weather, with temperatures peaking at 25C today, Friday, May 1. Forecasts indicate Saturday will reach 23C in London, feeling 2C warmer due to reduced cloud cover. Residents are advised to keep windows, curtains, and blinds closed until Sunday to maintain cooler indoor temperatures.

Why Seal Windows During Peak Heat

Well-insulated UK homes, designed to retain warmth in winter, trap heat during sunny spells. Closing windows during the hottest parts of the day prevents hot air from entering, making it easier to stay comfortable when temperatures rise again.

NHS guidelines recommend keeping rooms for babies and young children between 16C and 20C. When outdoor temperatures exceed this range, strategic window management becomes essential.

Tips for Staying Cool in Hot Weather

Energy experts suggest avoiding the urge to open all windows at the first sign of warmth. Instead, keep south-facing windows shut during daylight hours, especially when the sun shines directly on them. Open windows on shaded sides to allow cooler air circulation without inviting heat indoors. Ventilate fully in the evening when outdoor air cools.

OVO guidance states: “To keep your house cool, you need to keep the hot air out. This means keeping windows closed during the day – particularly south-facing windows. Keep curtains, blinds and windows shut when the sun is shining directly on them, and when you’re out. Try opening windows on the most shaded side of your home, to avoid sunlight and hot air getting in.”

Expert Insights on Cooling Myths

Heating professionals at BOXT warn that common tactics like opening every window or relying solely on fans may backfire. Adam Knight, Lead Engineer at BOXT, explains: “Getting rid of unwanted heat in your home can be difficult in the summer months, especially when most UK properties are built to retain heat. While grabbing a fan or opening up all your windows are often mentioned as effective ways to cool your home, these methods may not result in the desired results.”

He adds: “When temperatures are particularly warm, opening up all your windows will let more hot air into your home, heating up your home and making you feel warmer. Instead of opening all your windows, it is much better to strategically open windows to create cross breezes throughout the day and open your windows during the night to let cooler air in.”
