Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has transferred out of the intensive care unit following treatment for pneumonia. The 81-year-old, hospitalized on Sunday, and his family express gratitude for the widespread support and prayers received during the past week.
Recovery Progress
Ted Goodman, Giuliani’s spokesperson, states that the former mayor requires additional recovery time in the hospital before discharge. On Monday, Goodman confirmed Giuliani breathes ly after medical staff provided mechanical ventilation to sustain oxygen levels when the infection rapidly worsened.
Goodman posted on X: “The power of prayer is working. The mayor feels it. We feel it. Please keep them coming for America’s Mayor, Rudy Giuliani.”
Details of Recent Illness
Maria Ryan, Giuliani’s partner, explains that symptoms began during his return from a Paris trip. As his condition deteriorated critically, a priest administered last rites at his bedside. “This guy’s got 9 lives; today he’s doing much better,” Ryan stated.
9/11 Legacy and Health Impact
Giuliani earned the title “America’s Mayor” for his leadership during the September 11, 2001, attacks in New York, where he rushed toward the towers to assist those in need. This exposure later resulted in a diagnosis of restrictive airway disease, according to his spokesperson’s X post.
Michael Barasch, Giuliani’s attorney, reveals that his client seeks enrollment in the World Trade Center Health Program, which funds medical research and offers free care to 9/11 responders and survivors. “I’m proud to represent him and get him the health care he deserves,” Barasch said.
Support from Allies
President Trump posted on Truth Social, calling Giuliani the “Best Mayor in the History of New York City, BY FAR.” Trump criticized harsh treatment from political opponents and urged awarding Giuliani the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Prior Medical Incident
Last August, Giuliani sustained injuries in a car accident in Manchester, New Hampshire. As a passenger in a Ford Bronco struck from behind, he suffered fractured thoracic vertebrae, multiple lacerations and contusions, plus damage to his left arm and lower leg, per a statement from his head of security, Michael Ragusa.
