The Sheep Detectives (PG, 109 minutes) delivers a family-friendly ovine comedy with a murder mystery twist. This film earns three stars for its charming moments amid a talented cast and creative premise, though it doesn’t fully match the heights of predecessors like Shaun the Sheep (2015) and Farmageddon (2019).
Star-Studded Cast and Crew
The movie boasts an impressive lineup. Hugh Jackman stars as George Hardy, a dedicated shepherd, while Emma Thompson portrays his sharp-witted lawyer. Voice talents include Julia Louis-Dreyfus as the clever sheep Lily, Chris O’Dowd as Mopple, and Bryan Cranston as Sebastian, with additional voices from Patrick Stewart.
Behind the camera, director Kyle Balda (Minions) teams with writer Craig Mazin, known for Chernobyl and The Hangover Part II. Producers Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner from Working Title bring their track record of hits.
Plot Summary
Adapted from Leonie Swann’s 2005 novel Three Bags Full, the story unfolds in rural England. George Hardy names his sheep—like the feisty twins Ronnie and Reggie—feeds them blue medicine, and reads detective novels at dusk. Unbeknownst to him, the sheep talk and draw from those stories when George turns up dead.
Lily, hailed as the world’s smartest sheep, leads the flock—including Mopple and Sebastian—in unraveling the mystery. Human suspects include a bumbling local officer (Nicholas Braun), a persistent journalist (Nicholas Galitzine), and a sly shopkeeper (Hong Chau). George’s lawyer reveals he left behind two adopted children, adding layers to the convoluted plot reminiscent of Agatha Christie tales and the Knives Out series.
Strengths and Shortcomings
The CGI sheep shine with lifelike animation, and witty dialogue sparkles, especially as the flock suspects a ‘drifter’ per classic detective tropes. The film moves briskly with visual gags and humor suitable for all ages.
However, despite the pedigree, it feels somewhat underwhelming by the finale, offering amusement rather than outright delight. Viewers seeking lighthearted fun with a sheepish sleuthing vibe will enjoy it, but expect intermittent highs rather than consistent brilliance.
