Flood watch advisories are in effect for the Yukon River near Dawson City and the Nordenskiold River in Carmacks, as rising water levels threaten to overflow riverbanks. These watches signal potential flooding, which could escalate to warnings if conditions worsen.

Dawson City: Ice Jam Drives Rapid Rise

A major ice jam downstream from Dawson City, stretching eight kilometers, has pushed Yukon River levels close to the 1998 peak—the second-highest since 1979. This jam formed overnight and continues to grow as more ice flows downstream.

Current reports confirm flooding at the Moosehide site and elevated water in Dawson City. Assets on the river side of the dike remain at risk. While the jam’s release could cause a brief surge, predictions remain uncertain amid ongoing ice movement during breakup.

Nearby, a flood warning persists for the Klondike River at Henderson’s Corner, where some residents face evacuation alerts.

Carmacks: Melting Snow Sparks Concerns

The Nordenskiold River in Carmacks saw a sharp rise over 48 hours due to warm weather accelerating snowmelt. Levels peaked overnight but have since eased slightly, with cooler temperatures forecast to moderate the flow.

Overnight lows in Carmacks are expected to dip below freezing, potentially slowing further increases.

Other Yukon River Updates

Ice jams on the Pelly River below Ross River and at Pelly Crossing released overnight. Minor flooding affected the Ross River ferry landing and waterfront but receded by Thursday.
