Green Party leader Zack Polanski has acknowledged living on a houseboat in London until recently and addressed concerns over potential unpaid council tax.

Party Admits Oversight on Residence

A party spokesperson confirmed that Polanski has initiated payments for any council tax owed. “Zack apologises sincerely for the unintentional mistake,” the spokesperson stated.

Council tax applies to houseboats used as a person’s sole or main residence, according to tax expert Dan Neidle. After examining Polanski’s arrangements, Neidle noted on his Tax Policy Associates site: “If, as seems likely, that was his main residence, then Mr Polanski and his partner should have paid council tax there.”

Questions Over Primary Residence

Polanski faces scrutiny regarding whether the houseboat, moored at a Hackney marina, served as his primary home. Reports highlight that he and his partner advertised the boat for sale, with his partner stating: “We are moving house and so will sadly be leaving the gorgeous community behind.”

The Green Party previously indicated Polanski rented a room at another London address, where council tax formed part of the rent, and that he visited the boat only occasionally. However, evidence suggests otherwise: a local laundrette handled laundry for Polanski and his partner from 2023 to 2025, and they used a nearby building as a postal address. Voter registration records also list the marina location.

Official Response

In response to inquiries about Polanski’s residence and tax compliance, a party spokesperson explained: “Until relatively recently, Zack was living on a houseboat, which came with its own unique practical circumstances and considerations.” The statement added that he has “immediately taken steps to pay any council tax he may be found to owe” and declined further details on his address for security reasons.
