In a thrilling turn in the Scottish Premiership title race, Celtic clinched a dramatic 3-2 victory over Motherwell with a 99th-minute penalty, sparking outrage from Hearts manager Derek McInnes. Hearts secured a comfortable 3-0 win over Falkirk at Tynecastle, positioning them on the brink of the title until Celtic’s late escape at Fir Park.

The Controversial VAR Call

With the score tied at 2-2, referee John Beaton reviewed a challenge between Motherwell’s Sam Nicholson and Celtic’s Auston Trusty on the advice of VAR official Andrew Dallas. Beaton awarded a penalty for handball, despite replays appearing inconclusive. Kelechi Iheanacho converted the spot-kick, handing Celtic all three points.

McInnes, whose team was denied two strong penalty claims in their previous 1-1 draw at Motherwell, reacted strongly. “I heard there was a late penalty in the 96th minute—I didn’t need to ask who for,” he said. “You just assume they are getting it. It’s disgusting. We’re up against everybody. I don’t think it’s a penalty.”

He added, “If I’m Motherwell, I’m really disappointed. It’s so poor and it looks as though they have been given it. They are very fortunate. Having seen that, it feels like us against everybody.” McInnes described the decision as “such a bad decision,” expressing dismay at refereeing standards.

Former England striker Gary Lineker echoed the frustration on social media, stating: “This might be the worst VAR decision I’ve seen. Extraordinary given the significance.”

Title Race Implications

Hearts’ victory over Falkirk, highlighted by Cammy Devlin’s brace, briefly suggested a three-point lead and six-goal goal-difference advantage heading into the final day. Celtic’s win keeps the race alive, forcing Hearts to avoid defeat at Celtic Park on Saturday to claim their first league title in 66 years.

Final-Day Motivation

McInnes views the sense of injustice as fuel for the showdown against Celtic boss Martin O’Neill. “Yeah, of course,” he said when asked if it motivates his squad. “You’re going into 60,000. The place will be rocking. And we’ll look forward to it.”

He emphasized Hearts’ strong record against Celtic, noting a draw suffices for the title. “We’ve got a good record against Celtic. We know a point will do us,” McInnes stated. “It’s going to the last game. We’re delighted to be part of it.”
