Russell & Bromley Returns to High Streets Following Strategic Acquisition
The well-known British footwear and handbag chain, Russell & Bromley, is making a comeback on high streets across the country, just weeks after a significant number of its stores ceased operations. The brand has been acquired by retail giant Next as part of a pre-pack administration deal, a move aimed at preserving its legacy.
A New Chapter Secured Through Acquisition
The acquisition, which took place in January, saw Next purchase the luxury brand for £2.5 million. This agreement also included the transfer of all intellectual property rights and an additional £1.3 million for existing stock. While this deal was crucial for the brand’s survival, it resulted in the closure of 33 stores and nine retail concessions. Consequently, many jobs were impacted, with staff facing redundancy claims currently being managed by Interpath, a global financial firm also overseeing the remaining business operations.
Selective Reopening Signals Strategic Focus
Following the administration, Next adopted a selective approach to maintaining Russell & Bromley’s physical presence. Initially, only three prominent locations remained open: stores in Chelsea, Mayfair, and at the Bluewater shopping centre. However, in a significant development, the brand has now reopened its doors in Richmond, South-west London, approximately one month after its last store closure.
Customer Excitement Greets Relaunch
The reopening has been met with considerable enthusiasm from shoppers. Social media platforms have seen an outpouring of positive reactions, with customers ing their delight. Comments such as “Excellent. Good news” and “Good news for Richmond” reflect the public’s positive reception to the brand’s return.
Brand Heritage and Future Outlook
Founded in 1879 by George Bromley and Elizabeth Russell, the company has a long-standing heritage in the British retail landscape. Currently led by Andrew Bromley, the decision to sell was described as difficult but necessary to secure the brand’s future. He previously stated, “Following a strategic review with external advisers, we have taken the difficult decision to sell the Russell & Bromley brand. This is the best route to secure the future for the brand, and we would like to thank our staff, suppliers, partners and customers for their support throughout our history.”
Next has indicated its commitment to providing operational stability and expertise to support Russell & Bromley’s next phase. A company spokesperson commented, “This acquisition secures the future of a much-loved British footwear brand. Next intends to build on this legacy and provide the operational stability and expertise to support Russell & Bromley’s next chapter, allowing it to return to its core mission: the design and curation of world-class, premium footwear and accessories for many years to come.”
