A regional radio executive has been suspended following an incident where he allegedly groped an employee in front of a live audience at the Australian Audio Awards.
Executive’s Actions Draw Gasps and Condemnation
Guy Ashford, the head of Newcastle radio station 2HD, was on stage at Carriageworks in Sydney on Thursday evening. As award winner Cheralyn Darcey, a radio host at 2HD, accepted her prize for best newcomer, Ashford embraced her. During the embrace, he reportedly reached behind and grabbed her on the backside with his left hand. His subsequent gesture of throwing his arms into the air was met with audible gasps from the assembled crowd.
The incident occurred as Darcey was being recognized for her work on ‘The Nightline’ on 2HD, a program broadcast from Newcastle and syndicated to other stations, including 2SM in Sydney.
Industry Reaction and Management Response
Attendees at the awards ceremony expressed shock and disapproval. One individual described the behavior as “grubby” and conveyed sympathy for Ms. Darcey.
Super Radio Network, the owner of 2HD and 2SM, has responded to the allegations. Managing Director Graham Mott confirmed that an apology has been extended to Ms. Darcey and her husband. Mr. Ashford has been suspended from his position pending further discussions regarding the matter.
Award Winner’s Post-Event Remarks
Cheralyn Darcey shared a video on social media highlighting her acceptance of the award. While the footage did not include the alleged groping incident, she expressed her elation and surprise at receiving the “Best Newcomer On-Air Medium Market” award.
In her post, Darcey stated, “These are the moments that mattered.” She described the experience as an honor and highlighted the joy of reconnecting with colleagues and industry peers. She also extended gratitude to the listeners who tune into Australian radio and specifically thanked the “Nightliners” for their engagement with ‘The Nightline’.
