Newcastle United has reportedly identified Atalanta’s 21-year-old right-back, Marco Palestra, as a primary summer transfer target. However, the Tyneside club faces significant competition from several prominent clubs both domestically and internationally for the sought-after defender.

Palestra’s Impressive Form Fuels Transfer Interest

Palestra recently concluded a highly successful loan spell with Serie A rivals Cagliari, where he established himself as a consistent starter. His performances have not gone unnoticed, with Atalanta reportedly receiving numerous inquiries and appearing open to a sale.

Newcastle’s Defensive Reconnaissance

The club’s proactive approach to potential defensive reinforcements stems from anticipated interest in their current right-back, Tino Livramento. Livramento, 23, has two years remaining on his Newcastle contract, prompting a crucial decision regarding his future – whether to extend his terms or consider a sale.

While Manchester City and Arsenal were previously linked with Livramento, reports suggest City’s interest has waned. The departure of Kieran Trippier, who could operate on either flank, after his contract expired and subsequent move to Wolves, further underscores Newcastle’s need to bolster their defensive options.

Palestra Expresses Readiness for Next Career Step

Marco Palestra himself has acknowledged the growing interest surrounding him and expressed his readiness for a new challenge. Speaking from Italy’s training camp ahead of upcoming friendlies, he stated, “I’ve always felt ready. I want to thank Cagliari and the coach Pisacane for my first season as a starter in Serie A. Now I’m focused on these two games and starting over with Italy.”

He added, “For next season, I hope to grow and improve even more, to fight for even higher goals.”

European Giants Vie for Palestra’s Signature

Beyond Newcastle, a host of top clubs have reportedly made inquiries about Palestra. Manchester City, Arsenal, and Inter Milan are all understood to have expressed interest in recent weeks as they evaluate their right-back options. Liverpool has also been mentioned in connection with the player, though they are reportedly prioritizing other targets.

Inter Milan, in particular, is rumored to be preparing a substantial offer as they potentially look to offload Denzel Dumfries. Without Champions League football to offer, Newcastle acknowledges the challenge they face in convincing Palestra to join their project, yet he remains a high-priority target on their shortlist.
