Charles Leclerc Secures Extended Ferrari Contract
As the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix approaches, Charles Leclerc, 28, has finalized a significant long-term agreement to remain with Scuderia Ferrari, extending his tenure with the iconic team beyond 2028. This new deal positions Leclerc as the Scuderia’s future cornerstone, a role that will span beyond the anticipated departure of teammate Lewis Hamilton.
Hamilton’s Contract and Season Performance
Lewis Hamilton, 41, currently has one year remaining on his contract. He previously indicated his intention to fulfill the terms of this agreement, contingent on Ferrari’s desire for his continued service. This season, both drivers have demonstrated strong performances. Leclerc currently holds third place in the drivers’ championship after five rounds, with Hamilton closely following. Hamilton has experienced a notable resurgence this year.
Leclerc’s Journey with Ferrari
Leclerc’s association with Ferrari began in 2016 when he joined the Ferrari Driver Academy. He clinched the Formula 2 title in 2017 before making his Formula 1 debut with Sauber. His transition to a Ferrari seat occurred in 2019, marking his first of 155 starts for the team at the Australian Grand Prix.
Driver Statements on the New Agreement
Reflecting on his extended commitment, Leclerc stated, “It has always been so much more than just a team to me. It’s the team I’ve loved and dreamt of being part of since I was a child, and after all these years it has become a second family.” He added, “Together we’ve shared incredible moments and some tougher ones, but I believe in this team more than ever, and I’m deeply grateful that we will keep pushing side by side toward our shared goal of bringing the World Championship back to Maranello.”
Leclerc further emphasized the significance of his role, saying, “Being a Ferrari driver is a dream, but it’s also a responsibility I never take for granted. I’ll continue to give absolutely everything I have to bring this team back to where it belongs, at the very top, for everyone in Maranello, and above all for the tifosi, whose passion is the heartbeat of this Scuderia.”
