Royal Family Gathers for Nuptials, Then Heads to Prestigious Race

King Charles III and Queen Camilla radiated happiness as they attended the wedding of Peter Phillips, a significant event for the royal family, before embarking on a helicopter journey to the Epsom Derby. The busy Saturday saw the King, 77, and Queen, 78, join other prominent royals, including the Prince and Princess of Wales, at the ceremony for Princess Anne’s son.

Peter Phillips, 48, exchanged vows with NHS nurse Harriet Sperling, 45, in a private ceremony held at All Saints Church in the picturesque Gloucestershire village of Kemble. This marks Peter’s second marriage, following the finalization of his divorce from Autumn Kelly in 2021 after 13 years together.

A Modern Family Celebration

The newlyweds’ special day was a reflection of contemporary family life, with Peter’s daughters from his previous marriage, Savannah, 15, and Isla, 13, alongside Harriet’s daughter Georgina, 13, playing integral roles as bridesmaids. They stood with the couple as they posed for photographs following the ceremony.

Following the church service, King Charles and Queen Camilla were promptly transported by helicopter from Gloucestershire to Epsom Downs in Surrey, ensuring their timely arrival for the Betfred Derby Day’s main race, scheduled for 4:00 PM. Their attendance is seen as a considerable endorsement for the annual event, continuing a tradition upheld by the late Queen Elizabeth II, who rarely missed the Epsom races during her reign.

Notable Attendees and a Royal Departure

Among the distinguished guests present were Princess Anne and Vice Admiral Sir Tim Lawrence, Peter’s sister Zara and her husband Mike Tindall, and Prince Edward with his wife Sophie. While Prince Harry and Prince Andrew were notably absent, it is understood that Andrew’s daughters, Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice, were in attendance.

The King and Queen were among the first to depart the ceremony, making their swift exit via helicopter. As the church bells chimed, a crowd gathered, offering cheers and forming an impromptu umbrella guard of honor for the bride and groom as they emerged for photographs. Peter and Harriet, accompanied by their three bridesmaids, waved to onlookers before departing in a vintage Rolls-Royce.

Shortly after, the Prince and Princess of Wales also departed to cheers, traveling in a black Audi with a police escort.

Expert Event Management and Future Engagements

The wedding festivities were managed by Bentley’s Entertainments, a firm with a distinguished track record that has previously overseen high-profile events, including the wedding of David and Victoria Beckham and multiple celebrations for Sir Elton John.

Peter Phillips and Harriet Sperling officially announced their engagement in August of the previous year, having been first linked in May 2024. Their families expressed their delight at the news in a joint statement.

It was anticipated that the King and Queen would attend the ceremony but not the reception, opting instead to fly directly to Epsom. Guests were set to toast the couple at a reception hosted by the groom’s family at Gatcombe Park.

Their Majesties’ commitment to Epsom Downs, where they serve as patrons of the Jockey Club, underscores their passion for horseracing. This appearance follows their attendance at Oaks Day in 2024 to present the Coronation Cup.

Epsom Officials Welcome Royal Presence

Jim Allen, Epsom’s general manager, expressed his honor and thrill at the King and Queen’s attendance. “Their Majesties show great enthusiasm, interest and support for horseracing in the UK and their attendance next week will be a proud moment for all of the team here and everyone connected with the racecourse,” Allen stated. He further emphasized the significance of Derby Day as an iconic British event, noting that royal attendance has been a long-standing tradition.

The royal couple’s presence at the prestigious Epsom Derby, first held in 1780, precedes the commencement of Royal Ascot by just over a week, highlighting their continued engagement with the British racing calendar.
