Parents are being alerted to an urgent recall of a widely distributed brand of baby wipes due to concerns over potential severe and life-threatening infections. Retail giant Target has proactively removed several of its own-brand Up & Up baby wipe products from store shelves and online platforms.

Bacteria Found in Baby Wipes

Recent testing has revealed the presence of specific bacteria within the wipes, posing a significant health threat, particularly to infants and young children whose immune systems are still developing. The contamination was identified following customer complaints and subsequent investigations.

The recall specifically affects:

  • Up & Up Fragrance-Free Baby Wipes
  • Up & Up Fresh Cucumber Scented Baby Wipes

These products were available for purchase across the United States through physical stores and online channels.

Health Authorities Issue Stern Warning

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a statement on June 5th confirming the removal of the products from sale. The agency has cautioned that exposure to the identified bacteria, including Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioi, can lead to serious illness.

“Use of products contaminated with Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioi may result in serious and life-threatening infections,” the FDA stated. This warning is particularly critical given the primary use of these wipes on vulnerable young populations.

Symptoms and Risks

Consumers had reported a range of adverse reactions after using the wipes, including skin irritation, eye irritation, and infections. Some users also observed discoloration within the product itself.

Health authorities emphasize that individuals with compromised immunity, including infants, face an elevated risk. Infections originating from the contaminated wipes could potentially enter the bloodstream, leading to severe conditions such as sepsis or pneumonia.

Manufacturer and Retailer Response

Both Target and the manufacturer, Sapro Temizlik Urunleri, have acknowledged receiving customer complaints regarding negative reactions. These incidents are currently under active investigation.

In a statement, the FDA indicated, “These reports remain under investigation. Target is coordinating with the manufacturer and continues to investigate this matter.”

Consumer Action Required

Customers who have purchased the recalled Up & Up baby wipes are strongly advised to cease using them immediately. Affected consumers are encouraged to return the products to any Target store for a full refund.
