Singer Criticized for Home Aquatic Display

Musician Jason Derulo is facing significant backlash online for a floor aquarium in his Tarzana, California home that houses a shark and a manta ray. The display, featured in a video showing Derulo showcasing the setup to a streamer, has drawn sharp criticism from social media users who deem the habitat inadequate and cruel.

Concerns Over Animal Welfare

Online commentators, particularly on the subreddit Fauxmoi, have expressed outrage, with many labeling the singer’s actions as “evil” and comparing him to an “off-brand Bond villain.” The primary concern centers on the belief that the confined space is insufficient for the well-being of the shark and the manta ray, potentially subjecting them to a “torturous existence” for the sake of vanity.

“There is absolutely no reason to do this,” one user stated. “I hate celebrities that treat animals like a shiny toy they want to show off. He needs to be reported.” Another commenter argued that keeping the marine life in an underground aquarium “should absolutely be illegal,” questioning Derulo’s “audacity to show it off.”

Inadequate Habitat Criticized

Users pointed out the lack of enrichment and hiding places within the aquarium. “The animals have nowhere to hide from people or bright lights or loud noises,” one observed. Another added, “There’s not even anything enriching in there. My childhood goldfish had a better setup.”

Specific concerns were raised about the number and species of animals in the tank. “Shark(S). Multiple. In a kiddie size swimming pool. I counted at least 3. Also stingrays. Terrible look,” one user commented. The setup was described as the “ultimate dick move,” with a user emphasizing, “That’s a living creature, not a decoration. And an empty f***ing tank at that. Not a shred of anything that could mimic a natural habitat.”

The space was questioned for its suitability for multiple large aquatic animals. “There’s no way that’s enough room for one shark, let alone the other things he has in there,” one person remarked. The sentiment was echoed by others who felt that aquatic animals are often underestimated, stating, “I think people get dismissive over aquatic animals because ‘They’re just fish’ but this is cruel.”

Alternative Suggestions and Past Statements

Some users suggested that Derulo could achieve a similar aesthetic without animal cruelty. “He could have a little robot fish in there or just a visual effect, for the exact same look. The cruelty is the only addition,” one commenter proposed.

Derulo had previously discussed his desire for a shark tank in his home. In a past interview, he mentioned, “I’ve always wanted to have a shark tank in my house. I came up with the idea of creating, like, a really large one on the floor.” He also detailed the current inhabitants, identifying a “forest shark” and a stingray. Derulo noted that the shark did not “want to coexist” with other fish, leading to them being consumed.
