California Girl’s Quick Thinking Saves Family from Blaze
A 10-year-old girl is being recognized for her remarkable bravery after alerting her family to a catastrophic house fire, saving six lives in Oakley, California. Elizabeth ‘Lizzy’ Morgan’s swift actions and instincts are credited with enabling her family to escape the rapidly spreading flames that engulfed their home on June 9.
The harrowing incident unfolded in the early hours of the morning. Lizzy was reportedly playing video games when the power suddenly went out around 3 a.m. This unusual event prompted her to investigate. “She freaked out and looked out the window to see what was going on,” recounted Lizzy’s mother, Nena Morgan.
Realizing the situation was dire, Lizzy, with the assistance of her brother Lucas, sprang into action. They navigated through the smoke-filled house, waking the sleeping family members and urging them to evacuate. The Morgan family, which included four adults and three children, had only moments to react as the fire consumed parts of the property.
Rapidly Escalating Danger
“My husband got up and verified what was going on,” Nena Morgan described. “Flames were already coming through our oldest daughter’s bedroom.” The situation escalated with alarming speed, leaving little time to salvage personal belongings. The family managed to escape the inferno with only the clothes they were wearing.
Emergency services received calls from concerned neighbors reporting flames around 3:29 a.m. Firefighters arrived to find the front of the house engulfed. According to the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District, responders encountered significant hazards, including downed active power lines near the property that arced and impeded their initial efforts.
“We arrived on scene to have the front of the house on fire, with the power lines between the pole and the house had dropped onto the ground. They were actively arcing, hindering our initial fire attack,” stated Fire Chief Jeff Burris.
Investigation Underway, Community Rallies
The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation. The family noted that there have been other recent fires in their neighborhood, including one in their backyard approximately two weeks prior. “Nobody knows why my backyard caught on fire in the middle of the day. Nobody knows why my house caught fire in the middle of the night with all of us in there,” Nena Morgan expressed.
Tragically, three of the family’s beloved pets perished in the blaze, and one dog remains missing. The house, which the family had called home for 14 years, sustained irreparable damage.
Despite the devastating loss, the family is profoundly grateful for their survival. “I don’t even know if we would have made it if we were all asleep,” Lizzy’s mother stated. The community has responded with an outpouring of support, with neighbors offering assistance and donations through Spotfund to help the family recover.
