Brit Trades UK for Thriving Life Abroad on £800 Monthly Budget
A British national has relocated from the United Kingdom to Chiang Mai, Thailand, finding a significantly improved quality of life for an estimated £800 per month. Robert Hoadley, 45, made the drastic move after feeling trapped by the escalating cost of living in the UK, which he described as a cycle of long working hours solely to cover rising expenses.
Seeking a Better Lifestyle
Hoadley, originally from Portsmouth, spent years working in construction and had limited opportunities for travel. He expressed a desire for a lifestyle with less stress and greater personal control over his time, stating, “I felt like I was just working to cover bills with no real freedom.” He emphasized that he did not want to postpone enjoying life until retirement, prompting his decision to sell his possessions and move abroad.
Since his relocation in 2025, Hoadley has established himself as an online content creator, focusing on topics such as the cost of living abroad and the process of relocating. He is actively developing multiple online income streams to support his remote work. His social media presence, under the name Sea Turkey Adventures, has garnered over 6,000 followers, with some videos achieving more than 200,000 views.
Health, Balance, and Savings
Hoadley reports feeling happier, more active, and finally achieving a healthy work-life balance. Despite the availability of inexpensive drinks, with pints costing approximately £2, he claims to be drinking less frequently. His primary sentiment is that he is now drinking socially rather than habitually.
He highlighted the abundance of lifestyle options in Thailand, including access to gyms, cafes, swimming pools, and ample opportunities for outdoor activities. Hoadley stated, “I’m much more focused on health and routine now. I wake up earlier, train regularly, spend more time outdoors, and I’m more conscious of how I spend my time and money.” He added that his evenings are now dedicated to social activities, such as meeting people for food or coffee, rather than solely focusing on drinking.
Financial Freedom and Cultural Differences
The United Kingdom’s cost-of-living crisis was a significant catalyst for his departure. Hoadley estimates he was spending over £3,000 per month in the UK, a stark contrast to his current comfortable expenditure of £800.
“That’s the biggest difference – you’re not constantly under financial pressure,” he explained. “A lot of people don’t realise how far your money can go abroad, and how different life can feel when you’re not constantly stressed about bills.” While considering other countries, Thailand emerged as the preferred choice due to its appealing cuisine, friendly population, established expatriate community, and significantly lower living costs compared to the UK.
The slower pace of life has also contributed to his positive experience. Hoadley observed, “In the UK, people can seem stressed, the weather can be grey for long periods, and it often feels like everyone is rushing through life. Here, the climate is better, the people are generally more relaxed, and there’s a friendlier vibe overall.” He attributed this to the prevalent atmosphere of people either on vacation or choosing to be in Thailand, creating a more positive energy.
Missing Home
Despite the numerous benefits, Hoadley acknowledges that the transition is not entirely without its drawbacks. He expressed missing friends and family, as well as the distinct British sense of humor, particularly sarcasm and banter. Additionally, he misses certain familiar foods and the traditional pub atmosphere, recognizing that every country has elements that are appreciated more upon leaving.
