Spotify is rolling out a significant visual update to its popular New Music Friday playlist, introducing short-form videos from its editorial team. This move aims to provide listeners with a more intimate connection to the curators behind the music selections.
Editor Insights Added to New Music Friday
Starting today, June 12, users in the United States, both free and premium, will begin seeing videos from Spotify editors as they navigate the New Music Friday playlist. These clips will feature the editorial team sharing their perspectives on major new releases, offering context and insights into the music shaping the current cultural landscape.
When asked about potential global expansion, a Spotify spokesperson stated, “At this time, we’re focused on establishing and nailing the editor-led videos in the U.S. We’ll share any updates on expansion plans if and when they become available.”
Deeper Dive into New Releases
Beyond personal recommendations, the video feature will also highlight emerging artists and delve into the narratives behind new songs and albums. This initiative builds upon Spotify’s existing in-app feature, The Drop Weekly, where editors dissect new releases and discuss relevant cultural moments. The Drop Weekly was initially launched in the US in September 2025.
Fostering Connection with Curators
John Stein, Head of North America Editorial at Spotify, explained the strategic intent behind the update in the company’s announcement. “New Music Friday has always been about helping fans discover the best new music each week. By bringing our editors directly into the experience, we’re giving listeners a closer connection to the people behind the playlist and more context around the artists and songs shaping culture right now,” Stein remarked.
The introduction of video content may initially prompt skepticism, particularly given past implementations of video features on music platforms. However, this particular upgrade to New Music Friday holds potential for adding substantial value. The platform is seeking to fill a gap by incorporating journalistic perspectives directly into the listening experience.
While Spotify’s existing ‘About the Song’ function offers brief summaries of track backgrounds, this information is often sourced from third-party sites. The new editor videos promise to offer a more engaging and personal way for listeners to learn about the stories behind the music. This feature could significantly enhance one of Spotify’s most accessed editorial playlists by putting faces to the music experts and providing a glimpse into their curation process.
For music enthusiasts who frequently explore external resources like Wikipedia, online magazines, and lyric sites for music trivia, these videos are expected to be a welcome addition to their research habits, even if they don’t entirely replace those practices.
