Renowned American pop and country singer Floyd Brown has passed away at the age of 79. Family members confirmed his death occurred on Tuesday, June 9th, following a lengthy battle with cancer.
His niece announced the news on social media, remembering him as “one of the greatest.” Fellow musician Chase Tyler, also from Baton Rouge, expressed his shock, stating, “It’s a shock for everyone. I don’t think anyone saw it coming.” Tyler added, “Floyd was a mentor early in my career. He was always a sweetheart to me and very encouraging to the younger artists coming up behind him.”
A Career Rooted in Swamp Pop and Country
Brown’s musical journey began in 1960 with the release of his debut track, “Thunderbird Beach.” He became widely recognized for his signature sound, which masterfully blended swamp pop and country genres, cultivating a dedicated fanbase across South Louisiana.
Among his most celebrated songs are “Kiss Me Just One More Time,” “I Can’t Sleep If I Can’t Sleep With You,” and “There Lies the Difference.” His debut album, “Finally,” was released in 1979 on Jimmy Rogers’ Baton Rouge-based label, Bayou Boogie Records.
Rise to Prominence and Career Setbacks
The 1980s saw Brown achieve significant national recognition after winning the Nashville Network’s talent competition, “You Can Be A Star.” However, his burgeoning career faced unexpected hurdles when the recording contract secured through his victory was terminated due to a corporate restructuring. A similar situation arose with Capitol Records, impacting his mainstream success.
Despite these setbacks, Brown maintained his status as a regional music luminary. In 2005, a compilation album titled “The Best Of Floyd Brown,” featuring 12 tracks, was released by AMG Records.
