ChatGPT’s Market Dominance Erodes as Competitors Gain Ground

New figures indicate that ChatGPT’s hold on the global AI assistant market has weakened, falling below the 50% threshold for the first time since its introduction. Despite this proportional decrease, ChatGPT maintains its position as the leading AI assistant, boasting over 1.1 billion monthly active users.

Gemini Ascends in AI Assistant Rankings

Analysis reveals that Google’s Gemini has significantly climbed the ranks, capturing 27.7% of the market share in May 2026. This contrasts with ChatGPT’s 46.4% share during the same period. While still holding the top spot, ChatGPT faces increasing pressure from Gemini, which now occupies a strong second position.

The data, collected by Sensor Tower, also highlights considerable recent growth for Anthropic’s Claude. Although Claude currently holds a 10.3% market share, its user base has expanded substantially. Other AI models, including Grok, Perplexity, DeepSeek, and Meta AI, command smaller portions of the market.

Claude Sees ‘Explosive Growth’

Sensor Tower noted Claude’s impressive expansion, stating, “Claude has experienced explosive growth, led by a strong web presence, and its True Audience share in the US has more than tripled.”

Increased User Engagement and Shifting Loyalties

Overall engagement with generative AI applications has more than doubled within a year. The first half of 2026 saw 36 billion hours spent on these apps, a significant increase from 17.2 billion hours in the first half of 2025.

However, a concerning trend for ChatGPT emerged following its agreement with the Department of War, which reportedly led to a surge in uninstalls. While uninstalls have since stabilized closer to average levels, the event signaled a dip in consumer trust. This development underscores a broader trend: users are demonstrating less brand loyalty to specific chatbots.

Factors Driving User Migration

Analysis suggests that consumers are increasingly willing to switch between AI assistants based on several key factors. These include the capabilities and release cycles of different models, integration with existing ecosystems and third-party applications, pricing structures, and even company policies.

Google’s Ecosystem Advantage

For Google’s Gemini, its integration within the broader Google ecosystem is a significant competitive advantage. The AI assistant benefits from seamless connections across platforms such as Android, Search, Workspace, and Health, providing users with a cohesive experience.
