Tragic Accident in Catalonia Claims British Paraglider
A paragliding excursion in northeastern Spain ended in tragedy on Wednesday afternoon when a 63-year-old British man became entangled in power cables, resulting in his death. The incident occurred near Palau de Noguera, a historic village situated a short distance from Tremp in the Catalan province of Lleida.
Emergency services were dispatched to the location following reports of a critically injured individual. It remains unclear whether the deceased was a resident of Spain or a tourist participating in recreational activities. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatality, with initial indications suggesting the event is being treated as an accident.
Emergency Response Details
A spokesperson for the regional Generalitat government confirmed the details of the incident. “The Generalitat’s firefighters received a call at 1:20 pm yesterday concerning a paragliding accident in the Palau de Noguera area, within the municipality of Tremp,” the spokesperson stated. “Immediately, three fire crews from the Tremp and Sort fire stations were mobilized. They conducted a search of the area, located the victim with serious injuries, and provided initial medical assistance until two crews from the Emergency Medical Service (SEM) arrived.”
The regional Mossos d’Esquadra police force was also involved in the response. “Unfortunately, the man, aged 63 and of British nationality, lost his life,” the spokesperson added.
Previous Incidents in the Region
This unfortunate event follows a similar paragliding fatality in the same province last month, where a 68-year-old paraglider died in a separate accident. In July 2023, another British man lost his life in a paragliding incident in Portugal. In that case, emergency responders initiated a search after a distress call reported a paraglider had crashed near a scenic spot north of Lisbon. The individual was found in cardiac arrest in a difficult-to-access area and, despite medical attention, succumbed to his injuries at the scene. That accident occurred in the Vale Bom area of Cadaval municipality, near the Montejunto Mountains, a region known for its natural beauty and wine production.
