Making Tax Digital Expansion Impacts More UK Workers

The UK’s tax authority, HMRC, is actively contacting individuals to inform them about a significant shift in tax reporting, known as Making Tax Digital (MTD). This new system, which officially began in April, is set to affect an increasing number of self-employed individuals and those with property income over the coming years.

Traditionally, individuals have submitted a single tax return at the close of each financial year. However, MTD introduces a requirement to use specialized software to submit quarterly updates to HMRC, in addition to the annual return. This aims to modernize tax administration and improve accuracy.

Phased Implementation and Thresholds

HMRC has confirmed a gradual rollout of MTD for Income Tax. The requirements are being introduced based on taxable turnover:

  • For the 2024/25 tax year, MTD is not mandatory for individuals with a turnover exceeding £50,000.
  • Starting from April 2027, the system will apply to those whose turnover surpassed £30,000 in the 2025/26 tax year.
  • From April 2028, individuals earning over £20,000 in the 2026/27 tax year will be required to comply with MTD.

Support and Resources Available

To assist taxpayers in navigating these changes, HMRC is hosting a series of webinars. These sessions are designed to provide comprehensive guidance for landlords, joint property owners, and businesses. Topics covered include understanding MTD requirements, practical preparation steps, relevant rules and timelines, software selection, agent authorization, and the benefits of the new system.

Specific webinars are available for businesses and for landlords and joint property owners. Details on how to register for these sessions can be found on HMRC’s official communication channels.

HMRC emphasizes the importance of these webinars, particularly for sole traders and landlords who manage their own tax affairs without an accountant or bookkeeper. The sessions will offer the latest information and practical advice to prepare for MTD for Income Tax, which becomes a legal obligation from April 6, 2026, for those with a turnover exceeding £50,000.

Further resources, including short instructional videos such as ‘How do I sign up for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax’, are also accessible via HMRC’s YouTube channel, offering additional support for a smooth transition to the new digital tax system.
